I’ve tried a lot of frozen, blended mocha recipes. Recipes from employees of famed coffee chains, chefs, chocolate and coffe fanatics but they’ve always fallen short of what I’m looking for.
I’m not much of a coffee fan. I enjoy mocha, but coffee alone does not do it for me. Because of this, I am not inclined to have coffee hanging around in the fridge for cold summer treats.
Thankfully, the recipe I’ve come up with doesn’t require that. It’s quick, simple and with a few ingredients most adults already keep in our kitchens we can whip it up in about 3 minutes.
The best part is that with this recipe you get what you want, WHEN you want it. No heating water, brewing coffee and waiting for it to cool to preserve the integrity of the treat.
3/4 cup milk
2 TBSP sugar
1 TBSP cocoa powder
2 TSP instant coffee (decaf makes it kid friendly!)
1 cup ice
1 TBSP chocolate chips
Blend the first four ingredients until smooth. Add ice and chocolate chips, blend to desired consistency. I blend several seconds, then stick a straw in to give it a check and blend a few more if needed.
Makes about 14 oz.
I use a vitamix but keep it in the variable speeds, so I think a lot of blenders should be able to handle this bad boy! You can also throw in some extra instant coffee to get that ground-beans-hitting-your-tongue effect.
Better and better, use fat free milk and it comes in about 230 calories. I split it with my little guy and adorn it with whipped cream and caramel sauce.
Just don’t turn your back on it. It’ll disappear before you look again 😉
